I’ve written on the old blog about The Wonder Years a couple of different times, most recently when their new album The Hum Goes On Forever dropped. If you didn’t see their big announcement yesterday on twitter…we saw this:
While my silly kids had me occupied, and I missed the reveal in real time let me break it down for you:
THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE GREATEST GENERATION DROPS TODAY AT NOON EASTERN!!!!!
Before the premier of the new music video for GODDAMNITALL (a previous b-side from The Greatest Generation which got a new breath of life and a beautiful thank you before the video started) we get a 3 minute commercial for “Crazy Dan’s Anniversary Box Set Emporium” describing what we can expect in the 35th anniversary edition set. It includes, but is not limited to:
Generational Trauma
3 LPs
Bonus tracks
Art from the original Album Artist
A 32 page BTS book with essays.
There is also a litany of special edition merch (hilariously “CGI-ed in later”) from socks to hoodies, to pennants and flags. It all looks amazing!!!!!
Again, get your clicking fingers and refresh buttons ready at Noon EST and head on over to their website: www.thewonderyearsband.com to grab what you want.
Don’t let the subtle drum beat and guitar riff fool you. This starts off mellow and instantly hits you in the face with a wave of angst and emotion within 5 seconds. The video is an amazing look into the last 2 years of the band raced through in a 3 minute period (which is amazing). But the opening lyrics speak very well to me as a self-identified elder emo:
My broken body
My aging knees
I haven't stood still since I was 23
As noted in my review of The Hum Goes On Forever, I mentioned how I love music which not only shows the band’s age, but are nice feeling of kinship as we elder emos aren’t as young as we used to be. I also think this is a phrase which ages well if it was a b-side and now re-recorded!
Meet me on the fire escape
If you're coming to save me
I've been lying awake
Staring out at the dead street
I'm alone
The cold air let me know
I'm on my own
You're never gonna show
One of the recurring questions throughout the song, is “what’s the problem with being alone?” I think this is also an interesting question that comes with the wisdom of age. Is it some alone time, because you’re tired and need a second from your children? Are you on your own from years of people making promises to do things which eternally go unfilled?
Regardless, this song is an absolute banger, and you should add it to your rotation list, but if you are someone who looks forward to a boxed set which is both limited edition (5,000) and commemorative of one of the seminal works in a band’s history, then head on over to https://loneliestplaceonearth.com/pages/the-wonder-years TODAY at Noon EST for your chance to grab some limited edition merch.
