I am at the point in parenthood where I can finally read with some of my children instead of just reading to my children. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love story time, because I spend most of my days teaching my speech and debate students about bringing literature to life. However, it is fun working through the process of my children reading, and I can really beam at how smart they are. Toby (7) has a great vocabulary, likes reading occasionally, but would rather be moving. Ainsley (6) loves reading time, because she loves all of the affirmations. Charlie (5) cannot read, but loves storytelling from his books. I’ve picked some YA/child oriented comic things in the past, and they’ve been hit or miss, but today’s offering from Papercutz seems to check the boxes I need for all three of my kiddos!
Children of the Phoenix: The Eye of the Storm
By: OSKAR KÄLLNER and KARL JOHNSSON
Releases: December 12, 2023
Two siblings thrust into a spacefaring journey must face their family's past trauma to change the galaxy's future.
When Elias and Alice’s mother disappears in a nearby forest, the siblings quickly embark on a journey to find her. But nothing can prepare them for what lies ahead–not when they come face-to-face with a crew of aliens who whisk them away to a spaceship where they meet terrifying creatures, dangerous attackers, and a secret that changes all Alice and Elias have ever known about their family. Amid the mayhem, will Elias and Alice be able to traverse through the stars and find their mother?
This book definitely feels like a story I can get into with all three of my kids. Why? Just let me count the ways:
It’s an epic journey
There are aliens
There is conflict
There is a family secret
They get to go to space?
These are all things that one if not all three of my kiddos are definitely excited about in the things we already watch or read. The other reason I’m excited is because Oskar and Karl are both parents vested in telling a great story! They said:
”We grew up with video games, comics, science fiction books and anime films. We are passionate about this project – Children of the Phoenix: Eye of the Storm is the book that we would have absolutely loved as kids. Now as parents, with a considerable amount of work behind us, we still cherish that sense of wonder. We want to share that feeling, and this abounding universe that we have created with readers everywhere,”
I’m thoroughly excited to work through this book with my kids as we move into something meaty to digest! Looking at the sample page, I definitely can see where my children can do more of the reading, and I can kick back, relax, and be a proud father!
